Biography

Françoise Calcagno was born in France in 1966. She graduated in Scenography, under Giovanni Soccol, from the Academy of Fine Art, Venice, Italy. Between 1993 and 1994 she was a scenography assistant at La Bottega Veneziana in Quarto D’Altino, and produced scenography for several amateur theatre companies. In 1996 she was invited to exhibit some of her etchings at the 8th Biennale of Contemporary Xilography in Carpi, curated by Enzo Di Martino, and is featured in the catalogue. Upon invitation to the Venezia Viva Etching Club, she produced more work using experimental techniques. In 1997 she was chosen to exhibit at the 2nd National Fabio Bertoni Prize Exhibition, in Fermignano (Pesaro); in 1999 she was awarded second prize at the same event. She has held courses in drawing and painting and has collaborated with the Centro Internazionale graphic printmakers of Venice. She has participated in many group and solo exhibitions with paintings and prints both in Italy and abroad. For several years she has worked with the Atelier Aperto of Venice, directed by Nicola Sene, exploring traditional and experimental etching techniques with artists from different countries. In 1999 she held a personal exhibition of painting and prints at Palazzo Crepadona in Belluno, Italy, and also showed some prints at the Venezia Viva Gallery in Venice, where she presented two of her artist’s books; the same year she participated in the 4th Printmaking Biennale Tradizione e Innovazione (Tradition and Innovation) at Città di Sant’Elpidio, and exhibited her artist’s book Balena di pietra (The Stone Whale) as part of the festival Libri e fogli d’artista (The Artist’s Books and Papers) with the Centro Internazionale della Grafica, at the Honor Salon of the Italian Consulate in Grenoble, France. In January 2000 she held a solo exhibition of her paintings at the Spazio Pisanello Gallery in Verona and in May her installation of various materials in collaboration with Isabelle Poilprez was shown at the Rossella Junck glassworks gallery in Venice. She also held another personal exhibition at the Leonardo da Vinci Cultural Centre of San Donà di Piave (VE). In January 2002 she was invited by Riccardo Licata to participate in the Contemporary Art Biennale Salon Comparaisons 2002 in Paris. In November that year she exhibited one of her artist’s books at the 7th Biennial Pyramid Atlantic Book Arts Fair in Washington D.C. In April 2004, at the Gallery 10 in Washington, she exhibited graphic work with the Atelier Aperto group; at the same time she held a solo exhibition of small paintings and etchings at the Bistrot de Venise in Venice. In June 2004, she was chosen to exhibit at the Ponte Rosso Gallery in Milan for the Carlo Dalla Zorza Prize Exhibition and features in the catalogue. In December 2004, she was invited by curator Elisa Capitanio to show her work at the Malvasia Vecchia Club in Venice, in a personal exhibition called La materia e il tempo (Time and Matter). In November 2005, she was invited by Riccardo Licata to participate in the 12th International Biennale of Etching and New Images at Sarcelles Val de France and features in the catalogue. In October 2006, one of her works was selected for an exhibition at the Bevilacqua La Masa Gallery in Venice and features in the catalogue of the International Art Prize Un menu per La Colomba (A Menu For the Dove). In June 2007 she exhibited a selection of her most recent works at Ottica Urbani, in Venice, during the Percorsi Urbani (Urban Pathways) project. In October 2007, she was invited by the Laboratorio di Ricerca d’Arte Contemporanea Pardes in Mirano (VE), to create an environmental installation for the Paesaggi letterari (Literary Landscapes) project, curated by Maria Luisa Trevisan and Tobia Ravà, based on the literature and landscape of 20th century Veneto. In November 2007, two of her artist’s books were selected for the 5th Cassino Artist’s Book Biennale exhibition and catalogue. In May 2008 she was invited to take part in the Architecture of the Image - Image of Architecture - 500 Years After Palladio project, curated by XX.9.12 FABRIKArte, a series of exhibitions moving from Slovenia to Italy. In August 2008 she took part in the 8th Lorenzago Aperta Contemporary Art Festival curated by Vito Vecellio. In October her personal exhibition, curated by Francesca Brandes takes place at the FUORIcentro Gallery in Rome. During the 2009 she was invited to take part in several art exhibitions in Italy and abroad. Among these the itinerant Art Session “Effetticollaterali#2 /Controindicazioni d'Arte” on the occasion of the project “Archivio Vinile”, curated by XX.9.12 FABRIKArte. In June 2009 she exhibited with Maria Grazia Oppo at Gallerjia Insula (Izola, Slovenia) and Palazzo del Pretorio (Koper,Slovenia). In the august of the same year she partecipated with her own stand, as artist and art dealer, at Fiera D'Arte Contemporanea “Proponendo” in Forte dei Marmi. She exhibited with other six artists of the gallery coming from different part of Italy. In November 2009 she exhibited at Egidio Fiorin's Colophon Arte in Belluno. In April 2010 she exhibited in a personal art exhibition on the occasion of “Contemporary Art Festival-Emergenza Arte” in Villa Farsetti, Santa Maria di Sala (Venice). One of her works of art became a part of the heritage of the Fondazione Renzo Melotti's museum in the new hospital S.Anna in Ferrara. In June 2010 she exhibited at Galleria Profil in Poznan, Poland. In October and November of the same year she exhibited in a personal exhibition called “Mnemotecniche” at the gallery “Talenti Arte e Cultura” in Portobuffolè (TV), curated by Francesca Brandes. In September 2011 she was invited to exhibit in a personal exhibition at “Le Moulin des Arts” in Entrecasteaux (France). In September of the same year her artist's book “Balena di pietra” (ed.2008) was given to Gabinetto delle Stampe, department of artist's book, of the library Panizzi of Reggio Emilia with a series of her art editions by Centro Internazionale della Grafica of Venice. The same library, thankful, organized an art exhibition about this donation. In November 2012 she was invited in a personal exhibition in Rueil- Maimaison (Paris). In Genuary 2013 she participated at the exhibition “Actuelle Selfportraits” by Alain Rivière at the “Nachbarschaftsgalerie” in Berlin. In April and May 2014 she held a personal exhibition at “Molino Stucky Hilton” in Venice. In June 2014 she exhibit her last paintings at “Giudecca Art Gallery 795”, and at the “Art Factory Tobia Ravà” in Venice. Some Françoise Calcagno's works of art are exhibited permanently at the gallery “Artisti”, in Rueil-Malmaison (Paris) and at the gallery “Vision in Motion” in Conegliano. Her work appears in numerous catalogues and contemporary art and culture magazines. In 2013 she has founded the Boiler Art Association, a project that has created a collective of artists who regularly exhibit at the Art Studio. The Art Studio has become so over the years a meeting place for artists who have the opportunity to exhibit their works and discuss their own research as well as the place of discussions and readings, laboratory of ideas and projects.
